Bacteriostatic describes a drug that halts bacterial growth and reproduction without directly killing the bacteria. Think of it as freezing the enemy in place: the bacteria stop multiplying, and the body's own immune cells then clear the now-static population.
Bacteriostatic drugs typically interfere with processes the bacterium needs to grow but not to merely survive — most classically protein synthesis, by binding the ribosome in a way that stalls rather than destroys it. Remove the drug, and surviving bacteria can often resume growing, which is why finishing the full course and a working immune system both matter.
These drugs are perfectly effective for most ordinary infections in healthy people, where slowing the bacteria gives the immune system time to win. The honest limit is that they rely on host defenses, so they are usually avoided in settings where bacteria must be eradicated outright, such as meningitis or infections in immunocompromised patients — situations that call for a bactericidal agent instead.
Tetracyclines are bacteriostatic, binding the bacterial ribosome to block protein synthesis and pausing growth until the immune system mops up.
Pausing growth lets the host immune system finish the job.
The bactericidal/bacteriostatic distinction is concentration-dependent and species-dependent: the same drug can be static at low levels and cidal at high ones.
