anatomical planes and axes
If two clinicians describe the same patient from different angles, they can talk straight past each other. So medicine fixes a shared frame of reference: the body is imagined standing upright, facing forward, palms forward (the 'anatomical position'), and three flat planes are sliced through it. Everyone then describes movement against the same map, the way map directions only make sense once everyone agrees which way is north.
The three planes are simple slices. The sagittal plane divides the body into left and right halves, and movements in it are forward-and-back — bending and straightening, like a forward bow or a marching leg. The frontal (or coronal) plane divides front from back, and movements in it are side-to-side — raising an arm out sideways, or leaning sideways. The transverse plane divides top from bottom, and movements in it are twisting or rotating — turning your head to look over your shoulder, or rotating the trunk. Each plane has a matching axis, an imaginary rod the movement turns around, running perpendicular to the plane; a movement always rotates around its axis the way a door swings around its hinge.
This framework underlies the whole vocabulary of movement and of measuring it. When a therapist records that a knee 'flexes' or a hip 'abducts', those words are defined relative to these planes, and a goniometer measures the angle within the right plane. It also flags a common simplification: real, useful movement — reaching across the body, walking, getting up — happens in several planes at once, so training only in a single plane (just forward-and-back, say) can leave a person clumsy at the diagonal, rotational tasks that daily life actually demands.
Raising your arm straight out in front of you happens in the sagittal plane; raising it straight out to the side happens in the frontal plane; turning your forearm to look at your palm is rotation in the transverse plane. Reaching to a high shelf and turning to set down a cup combines all three at once.
Sagittal = forward/back, frontal = side-to-side, transverse = rotation.
The planes are a description tool, not how the body really moves: almost all functional movement crosses several planes at once, so single-plane terms simplify a fundamentally three-dimensional action.
