In depth · the introduction

The hypothesis under test
Months earlier, Lee and Yang had pointed out that parity — invariance under spatial inversion, the idea that nature does not distinguish left from right — had been verified for the strong and electromagnetic forces but never actually tested for the weak interaction responsible for beta decay. They proposed a direct test: align the spins of radioactive nuclei and ask whether the electrons come out symmetrically along and against that spin.
The experiment
Cobalt-60 was incorporated into a single crystal of cerium magnesium nitrate and cooled by adiabatic demagnetization to about 0.003 K, where a small magnetic field could line up the nuclear spins. The radioactive layer was kept extremely thin (~0.002 inch) so the beta electrons could escape, an anthracene scintillator counted them along the spin axis, and the anisotropy of the two emitted gamma rays measured how well the nuclei stayed aligned.
If an asymmetry in the distribution between θ and 180°−θ (where θ is the angle between the orientation of the parent nuclei and the momentum of the electrons) is observed, it provides unequivocal proof that parity is not conserved in beta decay.
The result
A pronounced asymmetry appeared: more electrons were emitted opposite to the nuclear spin than along it. As the crystal slowly warmed over about eighteen minutes and the alignment was lost, the asymmetry faded in step — its own built-in control. Parity is not conserved in the weak interaction.
