In depth · the introduction

The dye experiment
Reynolds ran water through a straight glass tube and, through a fine nozzle, injected a thread of coloured dye on the axis. By raising the flow slowly he could watch the dye reveal what the water was doing.
When the velocities were sufficiently low, the streak of colour extended in a beautiful straight line through the tube.
As the velocity was increased by small stages, at some point in the tube, always at a considerable distance from the trumpet or intake, the colour band would all at once mix up with the surrounding water, and fill the rest of the tube with a mass of coloured water.
Viewed by the light of an electric spark, that diffuse mass resolved into a crowd of distinct eddies — the flow had become, in Reynolds' words, 'sinuous' rather than 'direct.'

The criterion
Reynolds then showed that the change-over does not depend on speed alone. The same transition occurs whenever a single dimensionless combination of the speed U, the pipe diameter D and the fluid's density ρ and viscosity μ — the group ρUD/μ — crosses a critical value, which he placed near 1900–2000. Below it, viscosity smooths out disturbances and the flow stays direct; above it, inertia overwhelms viscosity and eddies take hold.
