In depth · the introduction

The principle
Doppler argues that the frequency a stationary observer perceives depends on whether the source of the waves is moving toward or away from them. As a source advances, each new crest is launched a little closer to the one before, so the waves reaching an observer ahead arrive crowded together — at a higher frequency; the waves reaching an observer behind arrive stretched out — at a lower frequency.
He frames the claim as general to all waves, illustrating it with the picture of a ship meeting versus following ocean swells, and writes it as a proportion between the perceived and emitted frequencies and the speeds involved.
The application to the stars
Doppler's chief purpose is astronomical: he proposes that the motions of binary stars toward or away from us should shift the colour of their light, and offers this as the explanation for why the two stars of certain pairs appear in contrasting colours.

The full memoir works through the proportion quantitatively and applies it, star by star, to the coloured double stars then catalogued. The complete original German text is available at the source below.
