In depth · the introduction

The letter announces a three-electrode circuit element, built on a semiconductor, that does the work for which vacuum tubes were ordinarily used — amplification and oscillation — but with no vacuum, no heated filament and no warm-up. The authors call it the transistor.
The device
It is built on a small block of high-back-voltage n-type germanium. Two metal point contacts — phosphor-bronze or tungsten — are pressed onto the upper face only about 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) apart; these are the emitter and the collector. A third, large-area contact on the base of the block completes the circuit. The emitter is biased a little positive (forward), the collector more strongly negative (reverse).
What it does
A small current fed into the emitter controls a much larger current drawn at the nearby collector: a change at the emitter produces a comparable change at the collector, but because the emitter sits in a low-resistance circuit and the collector in a high-resistance one, the signal comes out carrying far more power. The authors report a power gain of the order of a hundred — amplification from a solid crystal, with no moving parts and no vacuum.
The companion paper by Brattain and Bardeen on the nature of the forward current, and Bardeen and Brattain's fuller 1949 account, trace this to the injection and flow of carriers in the germanium. The name records the mechanism: a device whose output resistance transfers the input current — a transfer resistor, transistor.
