For all its triumphs, the Standard Model is honest about being unfinished. It is like a beautifully detailed map of a continent that, in the corners, simply says 'here be things we cannot draw'. Knowing exactly what it leaves out is as important as knowing what it gets right, because those gaps are where the next breakthroughs are expected to come from.

The big omissions are concrete. Gravity is not in the model at all — the one force we feel most directly has no quantum description that fits with the rest. Dark matter, which astronomers infer makes up most of the matter in the universe, is not any particle on the chart. The model also does not, by itself, explain why neutrinos have mass (it originally assumed they had none), and it cannot account for why the universe ended up made of matter rather than equal matter and antimatter. There are also nagging theoretical worries, like why the Higgs mass is what it is, and a handful of measurements that hint at, but do not yet confirm, cracks.

It is important to be candid here: despite decades of searching, there is as yet no confirmed, reproducible particle-physics experiment that flatly contradicts the Standard Model in the lab. The evidence for what it leaves out comes mostly from astronomy and cosmology (dark matter, the matter-antimatter imbalance) and from neutrino masses. So the Standard Model is not wrong where it has been tested — it is incomplete, and finding what lies beyond it is the central quest of the field.

Galaxies spin so fast that their visible matter alone should fling them apart — the extra gravitational pull comes from dark matter, which is nowhere on the Standard Model's chart.

The clearest gaps come from astronomy, not the lab.

There is still no confirmed lab experiment that directly contradicts the Standard Model; the strongest evidence for new physics comes from cosmology and neutrino masses, so the model is incomplete rather than disproven.
