Where very hot, bright stars shine, their ultraviolet light is energetic enough to knock electrons clean off hydrogen atoms — to ionize them. This creates a phase of the interstellar medium made of free protons and free electrons rather than intact atoms: a warm, glowing, electrically charged gas spread thinly through much of the galaxy. Astronomers call it the warm ionized medium, or WIM.

The WIM sits at roughly 8,000 to 10,000 kelvin and a density of around a tenth of an atom per cubic centimeter — warmer than the neutral gas but far cooler and denser than the violent hot phase. Unlike the tight, bright nebulae right around hot stars (HII regions), the WIM is a faint, diffuse haze that fills a thick layer above and below the galactic disk, reaching a thousand light-years or more off the plane. It reveals itself by the soft red glow of hydrogen recombining — the same hydrogen-alpha light that paints emission nebulae, only far dimmer and spread across the whole sky.

The WIM is something of a puzzle: it holds a large share of the galaxy's ionized gas, yet it lies far from the hot stars that are supposed to ionize it. The leading idea is that ultraviolet photons leak out of dense star-forming regions and travel huge distances before being absorbed, keeping the diffuse gas lit. It matters because this faint glowing gas is a major reservoir in the galactic recycling system, and similar diffuse ionized gas is seen in other galaxies too.

Sensitive surveys of hydrogen-alpha light reveal a faint, all-sky red glow far from any bright nebula — the warm ionized medium quietly recombining, the diffuse cousin of the showpiece emission nebulae.

The WIM is the faint, sky-wide cousin of bright HII-region nebulae.

Do not confuse the diffuse warm ionized medium with the bright, compact HII region wrapped around a hot star. They are both ionized hydrogen, but the WIM is far thinner, fainter, and spread across vast volumes far from the ionizing stars.
