Picture measuring out medicine not by weighing it but by carefully reading how many millilitres fill a spoon. Volumetric analysis is chemistry built on that habit: you learn how much of a substance is present by measuring volumes of solution very precisely.

In practice, volumetric analysis means determining an unknown amount through titration — adding a titrant of known concentration until a reaction is complete and reading the volume from calibrated glassware such as burettes, pipettes, and volumetric flasks. The amount of unknown follows from the volume and the reaction's stoichiometry.

It matters because, for a huge range of everyday measurements — acidity, hardness, chlorine, vitamin C — a careful volumetric method rivals expensive instruments at a fraction of the cost. Its limit is that it needs a clean, complete reaction and a sharp way to see when that reaction finishes.

A water-treatment lab checks chlorine levels by volumetric analysis: a measured water sample is titrated until a colour change shows all the chlorine has reacted, and the volume used gives the concentration.

Volumetric analysis (titrimetry) is the volume-based partner of gravimetric analysis, which weighs a product instead. Both are classical wet-chemistry methods that predate modern instruments but remain trusted references.
