venous thromboembolism
Venous thromboembolism is an umbrella term that ties together two closely related events: a clot forming in a deep vein (deep vein thrombosis) and a piece of that clot travelling to block a lung artery (pulmonary embolism). It is one disease seen at two stages, the way a fire and the smoke it sends downstream are parts of a single event.
Grouping them this way reflects shared biology and shared management. The same risk factors, sluggish blood flow, vessel injury, and a tendency to clot, drive both, and the same blood-thinning treatment, anticoagulation, treats both. Clinicians also use the umbrella term for prevention: hospital patients at risk of any venous clot are given thromboprophylaxis to lower their overall venous thromboembolism risk.
Venous thromboembolism can be provoked by a clear trigger such as surgery, immobility, or pregnancy, or it can be unprovoked, arising without obvious cause. This distinction matters because unprovoked or recurrent events often prompt longer anticoagulation and a search for underlying contributors such as cancer or inherited clotting disorders.
