Picture a layer of marbles loose on a perfectly flat tabletop. They can scatter freely in any direction across the surface, but none of them can hop up off the table or sink below it — they are stuck to that one plane. A two-dimensional electron gas is a crowd of electrons trapped exactly like that.

A two-dimensional electron gas is a thin sheet of electrons that move freely in two directions but are pinned in the third, usually because they are trapped at the boundary where two different crystals meet. The electrons gather into a layer that can be just a nanometer or so thick, yet they behave like a free-roaming gas within that plane. Confined this way, the electrons share a flat, sheet-like world, and many of their properties — how they conduct, how they respond to magnetism — differ sharply from electrons in an ordinary three-dimensional metal.

This matters because the two-dimensional electron gas is one of the cleanest playgrounds in physics: it is where the quantum Hall effect was discovered, and it powers the fast transistors in high-frequency phone and radar electronics. The honest caveat is that 'gas' is a loose word — these electrons are not a true gas of separate particles but a quantum sea that often interacts strongly, and at high purity and low temperature those interactions produce some of the most surprising effects in all of condensed-matter physics.

Stack a layer of gallium arsenide under a layer of a closely related crystal, and electrons spill down to the boundary and pool there into a sheet just nanometers thick. Cooled near absolute zero, this sheet became the stage on which the fractional quantum Hall effect was first seen.

At the boundary between two crystals, electrons can pool into a nanometer-thin conducting sheet.

A two-dimensional electron gas is, in effect, the electron half of a quantum well: the well is the trap, and the gas is the flat sheet of electrons living inside it and roaming the two free directions.
