Some technologies do not just improve life a bit; they reorganize it. The steam engine and electricity did not merely add a tool, they reshaped how people worked, where they lived, and how economies grew. Transformative AI is a deliberately outcome-focused label for AI that would have an impact on that scale, a change to society and the economy comparable to the agricultural or industrial revolutions, regardless of how the system is built internally.

The point of the term is to sidestep arguments about definitions of intelligence. Instead of asking is it really AGI? or does it think like a human?, transformative AI asks a cleaner question: does it change the world this much? A system might be far from human-like, or narrow in surprising ways, and still be transformative if it dramatically accelerates economic growth or scientific progress. Equally, something marketed as AGI might fall short of being transformative. The label is about effects on the world, not about architecture or whether it matches a checklist of human abilities.

For safety, the transformative framing matters because impact, not labels, is what raises the stakes. If AI becomes powerful enough to reshape the economy or the balance of power, then getting alignment, oversight, and governance right becomes correspondingly important, whether or not we ever agree it counts as AGI. The honest caveat is that whether, when, and how AI becomes transformative is deeply uncertain and contested; serious forecasts range from soon and enormous to gradual and overstated, and the term is a way to reason about high-impact outcomes without pretending that uncertainty away.
