There is a deep puzzle in translation: an mRNA codon is just three bases, and an amino acid is a small chemical with no natural attraction to those bases. Nothing about the letters AUG physically resembles methionine. So how does a sequence of bases ever pick out the right amino acid? Crick guessed there must be an 'adapter' — a molecule with a base-reading end and an amino-acid-holding end. That adapter turned out to be transfer RNA.

A tRNA is a short RNA, about seventy to ninety bases long, that folds back on itself. Drawn flat, the base-pairing makes it look like a cloverleaf with three loops; in three dimensions it folds further into a compact L-shape. The two business ends sit at opposite tips of the L. At one end is the anticodon — three bases that pair with one specific codon in the mRNA. At the other end, the very tip (always the sequence ...CCA), is where a specific amino acid is attached. So one end reads the code and the other end carries the cargo, joining the two languages of nucleic acid and protein.

The adapter idea solved the central mystery of how information becomes substance. The crucial point is that the link between the anticodon and the amino acid is not chemical destiny — it is assigned. An enzyme attaches whichever amino acid 'belongs' to that tRNA, and if you tricked it into attaching the wrong one, the ribosome would happily insert the wrong amino acid, because the ribosome reads only the anticodon, never the cargo. The tRNA is the physical embodiment of the genetic code: it is where an abstract three-letter word is married to a real building block.

tRNA-Met carries the amino acid methionine at its CCA tail and displays the anticodon 3'-UAC-5' at its other tip. When that anticodon pairs with the mRNA codon 5'-AUG-3', methionine is delivered exactly where the code calls for it.

One tip reads the codon, the other holds the amino acid — tRNA bridges base and building block.

The ribosome never checks whether a tRNA carries the right amino acid — it only checks the anticodon-codon match. The fidelity of the code therefore rests entirely on the enzyme that charges each tRNA correctly, not on the ribosome.
