When a hip or knee is so worn by arthritis that pain and stiffness wreck everyday life, the surgeon may replace the worn surfaces with an artificial joint — a total joint arthroplasty, most commonly of the hip or knee. The operation gives a new, smooth-running joint, but it is the rehabilitation afterward that turns a successful surgery into a person who can walk, climb stairs, and live independently again.
Rehabilitation usually begins within a day of surgery. Getting up and moving early is deliberate: it reduces the dangers of lying still (blood clots, pneumonia, deconditioning) and starts restoring confidence and motion. The program then progresses through controlled goals — regaining range of motion (especially knee bend and straightening, which a stiff replaced knee can lose for good if neglected), rebuilding the muscles that wasted during years of a painful joint, retraining a normal walking pattern, and relearning the everyday tasks of getting in and out of a chair, bed, and car. After a hip replacement, patients are often taught temporary 'hip precautions' to avoid positions that could dislodge the new joint while the tissues heal.
The realistic goal is a marked reduction in pain and a major gain in function, not a brand-new 20-year-old joint. Outcomes are very good for most people, but recovery takes weeks to months, depends heavily on doing the exercises, and the result is a mechanical part with limits — strenuous impact sports are usually discouraged, and the implant can wear or loosen over many years. Good prehabilitation (getting strong before surgery) and engaged post-operative rehabilitation are the strongest predictors of a good outcome.
The day after a knee replacement, the patient is helped to stand and take steps. Over the following weeks, regaining full knee bend and rebuilding the thigh muscle are the priorities — because a replaced knee that is left stiff early can lose that motion permanently.
Early motion and muscle work make a replaced joint usable — neglected stiffness can become permanent.
A joint replacement relieves pain and restores function but is not a 'new' biological joint: it has limits, can wear or loosen over years, and the result depends heavily on doing the rehabilitation, not just on the surgery.
