A house is made from only a handful of basic materials — brick, wood, wiring, insulation — combined in countless ways. The animal body is much the same: despite hundreds of organs, almost all of them are built from just four basic kinds of tissue. A tissue is simply a group of cells of similar type, organized together with their matrix to do a shared job. This entry is the bird's-eye view of those four families, seen at the level of the cells themselves.

The four basic tissues are epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous. Epithelial tissue is sheets of tightly packed cells that cover surfaces and line cavities — skin, gut lining, gland linings — joined by tight junctions, desmosomes, and adherens junctions and resting on a basement membrane; it is mostly cells with little matrix. Connective tissue is almost the opposite: relatively few cells scattered in abundant extracellular matrix, including bone, cartilage, tendon, fat, and blood, where the matrix (collagen, proteoglycans, even liquid plasma) does most of the work. Muscle tissue is made of cells specialized to contract using ordered arrays of actin and myosin, producing movement. Nervous tissue is cells specialized to carry electrical and chemical signals — neurons and their supporting cells — forming the body's communication network.

This four-way scheme matters because it organizes a bewildering body into a few understandable patterns, and because the differences are really differences in how cells join and what surrounds them — the very themes of cell junctions and the extracellular matrix. The honest caveat is that the boundaries blur and the categories are a teaching simplification: blood is classed as connective tissue though it has no solid matrix, organs mix all four tissues together, and real anatomy has far more subtypes than four. Still, knowing the four families gives you a frame on which everything else can hang.

Look at your skin: an epithelial sheet on top, connective tissue with collagen beneath it, muscle that raises hairs and moves the limb under that, and nerve endings threading through it all — four tissue types layered in one familiar place.

Even one patch of skin layers all four basic tissue types together.

The 'four tissue types' is a useful teaching frame, not a sharp natural law; blood counts as connective tissue despite having a liquid matrix, and real tissues mix and blur far more than four neat boxes suggest.
