thermal transport

/ THUR-mul TRANS-port /

Hold a metal spoon in a hot drink and the handle soon warms in your fingers, while a wooden spoon stays cool. Heat is quietly traveling up the metal but barely creeping through the wood. That movement of warmth through a material — fast in some, sluggish in others — is thermal transport.

Thermal transport is how heat energy flows through matter, and inside a solid it rides on two carriers. One is the electrons: in a metal the same loose electrons that carry electricity also ferry heat, which is why good electrical conductors are usually good heat conductors. The other is lattice vibrations, the trembling of the atoms, whose quantized packets are called phonons; these carry heat even in materials with no free electrons, like glass or stone. In both cases the carriers stream from the hot region toward the cold, colliding and handing off energy as they go.

Thermal transport matters because controlling it is everywhere: spreading heat away from a hot computer chip, trapping it in a house wall or a thermos, or deliberately blocking it in a thermoelectric device. The honest subtlety is that good heat flow and good electrical flow are not the same goal — in a thermoelectric material you want electrons to flow freely while heat flows poorly, a tension that makes such materials hard to design, since the very carriers often want to do both at once.

Diamond conducts heat better than any metal even though it carries no electric current at all — its stiff, light, perfectly ordered carbon lattice lets phonons race through almost unimpeded. A diamond knife blade feels cold to the touch because it whisks your skin's heat away faster than copper would.

Diamond carries heat through phonons alone, beating every metal despite conducting no electricity.

Heat moving through a solid is conduction; the everyday words convection and radiation name two other ways heat travels — by a moving fluid and by infrared light. Thermal transport inside a material is about conduction, where nothing bulk-moves.
