A tablet gets its size, shape, face curvature and any embossed logo or score line from a kind of precision mould — exactly as a coin is struck by engraved dies. Tableting machine tooling is that set of metal parts: the punches and dies fitted into a tablet press that confine the powder and compress it into a tablet of defined dimensions and markings.

Each station has three pieces: a die, a steel block with a precisely bored hole that sets the tablet's diameter; an upper punch and a lower punch, which slide into that hole from above and below. The lower punch drops to let powder fill the die cavity, then both punches squeeze together under high force to compact the powder, and finally the lower punch rises to eject the finished tablet. Punch tip shape (flat, concave, capsule-shaped), embossing and score lines are all engraved into the punch faces.

Tooling is built to tight engineering standards (such as the TSM and EU standards) because tiny dimensional errors translate directly into weight and hardness variation, and worn or damaged tooling causes the everyday faults of tableting — sticking (powder clinging to the punch face), picking (logo detail pulled out), and capping or lamination (the tablet splitting). It is precision-machined from hardened tool steel, must be inspected, polished and stored carefully, and is a controlled, traceable item under GMP because the same die size and punch engraving define the product's identity.

A 10 mm round, deep-concave punch set with a centred score line produces a curved tablet that can be split in half by the patient; if the punch faces are not kept polished, the granule begins to stick and the score line picks, marring every tablet.

Concave punch faces are not merely cosmetic: a curved face spreads the compression force more gently around the tablet edge, reducing the splitting fault called capping that flat-faced tools are prone to.
