A supernova flares and fades within weeks, but the debris it hurls into space lingers for tens of thousands of years, plowing outward and glowing. This expanding, sculpted wreck of a shattered star is a supernova remnant — the long-lived aftermath of the explosion, a tangled, beautiful shell of hot gas and dust spreading across light-years. Where the supernova itself is a brief flash, the remnant is the slowly unfolding scar it leaves on the galaxy.
The remnant is the explosion's ejected material slamming into the surrounding gas. The blast wave races outward at thousands of kilometers per second, sweeping up interstellar gas like a snowplow and heating it to millions of degrees, so it shines in X-rays as well as visible light and radio waves. Charged particles caught in the shock are flung to enormous energies, becoming cosmic rays and glowing in radio waves by synchrotron emission. Over thousands of years the shell expands, slows, and cools, eventually merging back into the general interstellar medium — a remnant can grow to tens of light-years across before it dissipates.
Supernova remnants matter because they are where a star's manufactured elements are finally mixed back into the galaxy, and where the gas is stirred, heated, and seeded for the next generation of stars. They are also the galaxy's main particle accelerators, the likely source of most cosmic rays. And at the heart of a core-collapse remnant often sits the crushed stellar core — a neutron star or pulsar — the dense corpse the explosion left behind. The Crab Nebula, from a supernova seen in the year 1054, is the textbook example, still glowing and still feeding on the spinning neutron star at its center.
