Track a bright blob in an AGN's jet over months, and sometimes it seems to drift across the sky so fast that, when you do the arithmetic, it would have to be moving several times faster than light. Since nothing can truly exceed light speed, something must be off. This apparent — but not real — faster-than-light motion is called superluminal motion, and it is one of the great optical illusions of astrophysics.

The trick comes from a jet pointed almost, but not exactly, at us, with material moving at very nearly light speed. The blob is chasing its own light toward us: each later flash is emitted from much closer to us than the one before, so the flashes arrive bunched together in time. We are fooled into thinking the blob crossed a large sideways distance in a very short time. Run the geometry and a blob moving at, say, 99 percent of light speed at a small angle to our line of sight can appear to move at several times light speed across the sky — purely a timing illusion, with no real superluminal travel.

Superluminal motion is actually powerful evidence, not a paradox: seeing it tells astronomers that the jet really is moving at relativistic speed and pointed close to our line of sight. It goes hand in hand with relativistic beaming (same near-light-speed, near-end-on geometry), and the two together underpin our understanding of blazars and jet orientation. The crucial caveat: the underlying physics never breaks. Nothing material outruns light; we are simply being deceived by light-travel timing.

In the quasar 3C 273, radio observations track jet blobs that appear to move at about 5 to 10 times the speed of light across the sky. The real speed is just under light speed; the apparent excess is the timing illusion of material racing toward us at a shallow angle.

Superluminal motion does not break the cosmic speed limit; nothing actually moves faster than light. It is an illusion caused by a relativistic jet aimed nearly at us, and seeing it is a reliable sign of exactly that geometry.
