Stochastic parrot is a memorable critique of LLMs: like a parrot, the model repeats and recombines language it has heard, and stochastic means it does so by probability, with some randomness. The phrase, from a 2021 paper, warns against confusing fluency with comprehension and against the social risks of huge, opaque models trained on unfiltered web text.
