Stellar feedback is the way newborn stars turn on their own parents and break up the nursery. A massive young star pours out radiation, wind, and eventually explosions so powerful that they heat, push, and ultimately blow apart the very cloud that made it. It is a self-limiting loop: star formation creates the agents of its own ending, which is why galaxies do not convert their gas into stars all at once.

Massive stars are the chief culprits, and they push back in several ways. Their intense ultraviolet light ionizes and heats the surrounding gas, building HII regions whose hot, high-pressure gas pushes outward. Their fierce stellar winds, streams of gas blowing off their surfaces at thousands of kilometres per second, sweep up bubbles in the cloud. The pressure of their light alone shoves on dust and gas. And when the most massive stars die after only a few million years, they explode as supernovae, injecting enormous energy that shreds the remaining cloud. Together these effects warm the gas, raise its pressure and its Jeans mass, and drive it away, choking off further collapse.

Feedback matters because it sets the efficiency and the pace of star formation. Without it, gravity would run away and turn molecular clouds into stars far faster and more completely than we observe; feedback is the brake that keeps only a small fraction of a cloud's gas turning into stars before the rest is dispersed. The same processes carve the glowing bubbles, pillars, and shells we see in star-forming regions, and can even trigger a new round of star formation by compressing nearby gas. Capturing feedback correctly is one of the central challenges in simulating how galaxies form and evolve.

Feedback both destroys the cloud and sculpts its most beautiful structures.

Feedback is mostly negative (it halts star formation) but not only negative: by compressing gas at the edges of expanding bubbles it can also trigger fresh collapse, so the same forces can both quench and spark star birth.
