stable and unstable equilibrium

Set a marble at the bottom of a bowl and it sits happily; nudge it and it rolls right back. Balance the same marble on top of an upturned bowl and it also sits — for an instant — but the faintest nudge sends it rolling away for good. Both are in equilibrium (no net force, so at rest), yet they could not be more different in how they respond to a small disturbance. That difference is what we mean by stable versus unstable equilibrium.

A stable equilibrium is one where a small displacement calls up a restoring force that pushes the object back toward the equilibrium point — the marble in the bowl. An unstable equilibrium is one where a small displacement produces a force that pushes it further away — the marble on the dome. On a potential-energy diagram the rule is beautifully visual: because force points toward lower potential energy, a valley (a minimum of U) is stable and a hilltop (a maximum of U) is unstable. A flat stretch, where a nudge changes nothing, is a neutral equilibrium.

This idea governs whether a bridge holds or buckles, whether a ship rights itself or capsizes, and which shapes a molecule settles into. One honest subtlety: stability is defined against small nudges. Something can rest in a shallow valley that is stable to gentle pushes yet perched inside a larger landscape, so a big enough shove tips it over into a deeper valley elsewhere — a situation engineers call metastable.

Picture a pendulum. Hanging straight down is a stable equilibrium: push the bob aside and gravity pulls it back, so it swings around that point. Balanced straight up (if you could manage it) is an unstable equilibrium: the slightest lean and gravity topples it further. The low point is a valley of potential energy, the high point a hill.

Equilibrium means only that the net force is zero, not that the object is safe there. Stability is a separate question about what happens after a small nudge — a pencil balanced on its tip is in equilibrium, but violently unstable.
