Decoder stability and recalibration (speech)
Neural recordings drift from day to day, through electrode micromotion, ongoing tissue response, and changing arousal or cognitive state, shifting the mapping from activity to speech and degrading a fixed decoder over hours to days. Usable speech BCIs therefore need periodic recalibration or online, ideally unsupervised, adaptation to stay accurate.
Card et al. (2024) emphasized rapid calibration and multi-day stability as prerequisites for a device a user could rely on at home without an engineer present.
Recalibration burden, how much data and time the user must spend re-training at the start of each session, is a key usability metric that a single headline accuracy figure hides.
