Self-softening (mechanically adaptive) probe

A self-softening probe resolves the tension between insertion and chronic compliance by changing its stiffness after implantation. Made from a mechanically adaptive material — for example a polymer nanocomposite whose modulus drops sharply on absorbing physiological fluid, or a shape-memory polymer softened at body temperature — the probe is rigid enough to penetrate tissue at the moment of insertion and then softens by one to several orders of magnitude in vivo, approaching tissue-like compliance for chronic recording.

This sidesteps the need for a separate insertion shuttle or sacrificial stiffener while still delivering a soft chronic interface. Open questions concern the reproducibility and completeness of softening in the body, the stability of the softened material over years, and whether the transient stiffness during insertion still imparts acute injury.
