the ribosome as a machine

Every protein in every cell is built by the same factory — a tiny, dense particle called the ribosome. There are thousands or even millions in a single cell, and together they are the busiest machines in biology, churning out new protein chains at a rate of several amino acids per second. The ribosome is where the genetic message is finally turned into substance.
A ribosome comes in two interlocking pieces: a small subunit and a large subunit. The small subunit holds the mRNA and is where codons are matched against incoming tRNA anticodons — it does the reading. The large subunit is where the actual chemistry happens: it links the amino acids together into a chain. Each subunit is itself a tangle of special RNA molecules (ribosomal RNA) wrapped with dozens of proteins. The startling discovery, recognized with the 2009 Nobel Prize, is that the catalysis — the forming of each peptide bond — is performed by the ribosomal RNA, not by the proteins. The ribosome is a ribozyme, an enzyme made of RNA. The proteins are mostly scaffolding; the RNA does the work.
That single fact reshaped how we think about the origin of life. If the core machine that makes all proteins is itself run by RNA, then RNA could plausibly have come first, doing both jobs (storing information and catalysing reactions) before proteins and DNA took over — the heart of the RNA world idea. Practically, ribosomes also matter in medicine: bacterial ribosomes differ enough from ours that many antibiotics — erythromycin, tetracycline, streptomycin — work by jamming the bacterial ribosome while leaving yours alone.
Sizes are quoted by how fast the parts settle in a centrifuge (in Svedberg, S, units). A bacterial ribosome is 70S, splitting into a 30S small and 50S large subunit; a human cytoplasmic ribosome is bigger, 80S (40S + 60S).
Bacterial (70S) and eukaryotic (80S) ribosomes differ in size — a difference many antibiotics exploit.
The S in '70S' is a sedimentation rate, not a mass, so the numbers do not add up arithmetically (30S + 50S = 70S, not 80S). It is a quirk of how the units were originally measured.
