The respiratory system is the chain of organs that brings air from the outside world deep into the body and lets oxygen pass into the blood. Picture an upside-down tree: a single trunk (the windpipe) branches into ever-smaller limbs and twigs, ending in millions of tiny air sacs like leaves where the real work happens.

Anatomically it runs from the nose and mouth, through the pharynx and larynx, down the trachea, into the branching bronchi and bronchioles, and finally to the alveoli — the microscopic sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide cross between air and blood. The upper part conducts and conditions air; the lower part both conducts and exchanges gas.

Beyond the airways themselves, the system depends on the chest wall, the diaphragm and other breathing muscles, the pleura that wrap the lungs, and the pulmonary blood vessels. Control comes from the brainstem and a set of chemical sensors that adjust breathing moment to moment. All of these together keep blood oxygen and carbon dioxide within a narrow, life-sustaining range.
