Schrödinger's cat
Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment Erwin Schrödinger devised in 1935 to dramatize how absurd quantum superposition becomes when scaled up to everyday objects. A cat is sealed in a box with a tiny radioactive sample, a detector, and a flask of poison rigged to break if a single atom decays. Whether the atom has decayed within an hour is a genuinely quantum, fifty-fifty affair. If the atom is in a superposition of decayed and not-decayed, the chain of cause and effect seems to put the cat into a superposition of dead and alive.
Schrödinger's point was not that he believed in half-dead cats. Quite the opposite: he found the conclusion ridiculous and meant it as a critique. The story forces the question of why we never encounter such grotesque superpositions in the large, tangible world, even though the underlying equations, applied without comment, seem to demand them. The cat makes the measurement problem vivid by escorting a quantum 'maybe' all the way up to a creature we can picture.
Modern physics largely explains why no real cat would ever be found in such a state: a warm, massive, many-particle animal would decohere almost instantaneously through its ceaseless interaction with the air, the box, and its own body, so any superposition would be hopelessly scrambled long before the lid was lifted. The cat is best read not as a real possibility but as a teaching device — a memorable signpost pointing straight at the still-open questions about where and how the quantum gives way to the classical.
The equations, taken literally, allow a dead-and-alive superposition; decoherence ensures we never observe one.
The cat is a critique and a teaching tool, not a claim that cats are ever literally half-dead. Schrödinger himself thought the scenario showed something was missing from a naive reading of the theory.
