Pointer states are the special quantum states that survive contact with the environment without being immediately scrambled. The name comes from the imagined pointer on a measuring dial: among all the configurations a needle could be smeared across, only the ones that read a definite value are stable enough to persist. Out of the infinitely many superpositions a system could be in, the environment quietly singles out a small, robust family — and those are what we end up perceiving as the classical, definite alternatives.

The mechanism behind the selection is decoherence. States that get entangled with the surroundings only feebly, and so leak little information about themselves, are the ones that keep their identity; flamboyant superpositions of them, by contrast, bleed their coherence into the environment almost at once. In effect the environment continuously 'monitors' the system and rewards the states that are least disturbed by being watched, much as repeated observation locks in a stable record.

Pointer states matter because they offer a physical, dynamical answer to a question the bare formalism leaves open: why do measuring devices end up pointing at sharp positions rather than at weird blends of positions? Rather than a human or a conscious mind deciding what counts as a measurement outcome, it is the structure of the system-environment coupling that determines which states are stable enough to count as classical. This is decoherence theory's most constructive contribution to the preferred-basis question.

The environment selects the robust states; their superpositions decay, so only the stable ones look classical.

Which states become pointer states depends on the specific form of the system–environment coupling, not on any universal law. For everyday objects the coupling usually favours states of fairly well-defined position.
