A home pregnancy test, a fingerstick glucose reading, a rapid throat-swab result in a clinic in fifteen minutes — these all skip the trip to a central lab and give the answer right where the person is. That is point-of-care testing: doing the test at or near the patient and getting a result on the spot.

Concretely, point-of-care testing is analytical measurement performed at the site of patient care — bedside, clinic, ambulance, or home — rather than in a central laboratory, using portable or handheld devices that give a result within minutes. It relies on rugged sensors, biosensors, and lab-on-a-chip cartridges designed for use by non-specialists.

Its value is speed and access: a fast answer can change treatment immediately, and testing reaches places with no lab. The honest trade-off is that this convenience usually costs some accuracy and precision compared with a full laboratory analysis, and because operators may be untrained, point-of-care results need careful quality control and are often confirmed by the central lab when stakes are high.

In an ambulance a paramedic places a drop of a chest-pain patient's blood on a handheld cartridge that measures cardiac troponin in minutes; a raised result lets the team treat a possible heart attack before reaching the hospital.

Point-of-care testing trades a measure of laboratory accuracy for speed and reach; a borderline or critical result is often re-checked by a full laboratory method before a major decision.
