A dried binder film, left to itself, is often hard and brittle — a cast ceramic tape made with binder alone would crack the moment you tried to bend it off the carrier. A plasticizer is the additive that softens that binder film, making it supple and flexible instead of stiff and glassy. It is the same idea that keeps plastic wrap and vinyl raincoats floppy rather than crackly: small molecules slipped in among the polymer chains to lubricate them.

It works by getting between the binder's long polymer chains and holding them slightly apart, so the chains can slide past one another more easily. In the language of polymers, the plasticizer lowers the binder's glass-transition temperature, Tg — the temperature below which a polymer is rigid and above which it is rubbery. Push Tg down below room temperature and a film that would have been brittle at your bench becomes bendable. Common ceramic plasticizers are polyethylene glycol (PEG), glycerol, and phthalate esters like dibutyl phthalate, dosed alongside the binder — often at a plasticizer-to-binder ratio you tune to hit the right flexibility. Too little and the tape cracks; too much and it becomes soft, tacky, and weak.

Plasticizers earn their keep above all in tape casting, where the fired product is a paper-thin ceramic sheet that must survive being peeled, punched, stacked, and rolled while still green — impossible without a flexible binder-plasticizer system. Like the binder, the plasticizer is a temporary processing aid: it too must burn cleanly out during debinding and leave nothing behind in the fired ceramic. And like the binder, it is a balancing act — enough to make the green tape handleable and flexible, little enough that it burns away without leaving voids or residue that would weaken the final part.

Two identical alumina tapes are cast, one with PVB binder alone and one with PVB plus a dose of polyethylene glycol. The first snaps like a cracker when bent; the second, with its glass-transition temperature pulled below room temperature, folds over a pencil without a crack — that flexibility is the plasticizer's doing.

A plasticizer softens the binder; it is not the glue itself and gives little green strength on its own. Balance the two — too much plasticizer makes the tape tacky and weak, and both must burn out cleanly during debinding.
