Imagine zooming in on the very first instant after the Big Bang, closer and closer to time zero. For a long stretch our physics keeps working — but there is a wall, a fantastically early moment beyond which our best theories simply break down and stop giving sensible answers. That wall is the Planck era: the universe's first tiny sliver of existence, when it was so unimaginably hot and dense that we genuinely do not have the physics to describe it.
The Planck era is the period before the universe reached the age of about 10^-43 seconds — the 'Planck time,' a number built from the fundamental constants of gravity, quantum mechanics, and the speed of light. To put 10^-43 seconds in perspective: it is to one second roughly as one second is to a hundred million billion billion times the current age of the universe. In this era the whole observable cosmos was packed into a region smaller than a proton, at temperatures around 10^32 degrees. At such scales gravity becomes as strong as the other forces and the smooth fabric of spacetime should itself churn with quantum uncertainty.
Why is this a wall and not just a very early time? Because describing the Planck era requires a theory of quantum gravity — a marriage of Einstein's general relativity (which governs gravity and the shape of space) with quantum mechanics (which governs the very small). We do not yet have a tested theory that does this; candidates like string theory and loop quantum gravity exist but remain unconfirmed. So the Planck era marks an honest boundary of current knowledge, not a settled chapter. Everything written about it is informed speculation, and the famous 'singularity' of infinite density at time zero is widely regarded as a sign that the equations have been pushed past where they apply.
The Planck time, about 5.4 x 10^-44 seconds, is built only from Newton's gravitational constant G, the quantum constant h, and the speed of light c. Remarkably, you can write down 'the shortest meaningful time' using nothing but these three numbers — which is exactly why physicists suspect that below it the usual notions of time and space cease to make sense.
The Planck time is assembled from gravity, quantum theory, and light — a hint of where all three meet.
The Planck era is a frontier of ignorance, not a known event. Any story about 'before the Planck time' or the t=0 singularity is speculation awaiting a tested theory of quantum gravity, which we do not yet have.
