Look closely at the edge of a water droplet sitting on a surface. It meets the solid at a definite angle, like the slope where a hill meets flat ground. That angle, measured through the liquid, is the contact angle, and it is the simplest practical readout of how well a liquid wets a solid.

The angle is set by the balance of three forces pulling at the droplet's edge, described by Young's equation relating the solid-air, solid-liquid, and liquid-air interfacial tensions. A contact angle near zero means the drop spreads out flat and wetting is excellent; an angle below 90 degrees indicates favourable wetting; above 90 degrees the drop beads up and wetting is poor; near 180 degrees the surface is essentially non-wettable, as on a superhydrophobic coating.

In pharmaceutics, contact-angle measurement is a standard tool in preformulation to judge how readily a drug powder will be wetted by water or by a granulation fluid, and to assess tablet coatings and packaging films. A high contact angle warns of dissolution and dispersion problems and prompts the use of a wetting agent. The honest caveat is that real powder surfaces are rough, porous, and heterogeneous, so a measured contact angle is an approximate, condition-dependent figure rather than a single true value.

A contact angle of 0 degrees means complete spreading; below 90 degrees the solid is wetted; above 90 degrees it resists wetting.
