pharmacognosy
Pharmacognosy is the study of medicines that come from nature: plants, fungi, microbes, and sometimes animals or minerals. It is the bridge between the natural world and the pharmacy, asking which living things make useful chemicals, what those chemicals are, and how they can become reliable medicines. Long before synthetic chemistry, this was nearly all of pharmacology.
The work spans identifying the source organism, isolating and characterizing the active compounds, and standardizing them so that a batch of plant material delivers a consistent, safe dose. Natural products have given medicine some of its most important drugs: morphine from the opium poppy, the antimalarial artemisinin from sweet wormwood, the cancer drug paclitaxel from yew bark, and penicillin from a mould.
Pharmacognosy remains a living source of new drugs and leads for drug design, while also informing the safe evaluation of herbal and traditional remedies. It carries an important caveat: 'natural' does not mean safe or effective. Plant extracts can be potent poisons, vary widely in content, and interact with conventional drugs, which is exactly why pharmacognosy emphasizes identification, standardization, and evidence rather than tradition alone.
