Imagine walking across a perfectly tiled floor where every tile dips slightly in the middle. Step by step, you feel the same gentle valley over and over, repeating with each tile. An electron travelling through a crystal feels something just like this: a landscape of dips and rises that repeats identically from one atom to the next. That endlessly repeating electrical landscape is the periodic potential.

A periodic potential is the repeating pattern of electrical attraction and repulsion an electron feels because the atoms of a crystal are arranged in a regularly spaced lattice. Near each positively charged atomic core the electron feels a deep well pulling it in; between the cores the pull eases. Because the lattice is periodic, this potential repeats with exactly the spacing of the atoms, and that regularity is what makes the whole machinery of band theory possible.

The periodic potential matters because it is the single ingredient responsible for energy bands and gaps; remove the periodicity and the bands dissolve. A subtle point worth stressing is that the periodicity, not the strength, is the crucial feature: a strong repeating potential and a weak one both give bands, just wider or narrower. Real crystals are never perfectly periodic — defects, impurities, and jiggling atoms break the pattern — and those imperfections are exactly what limit how well a material conducts.

Run an electron through a row of identical wells spaced a fixed distance apart — the textbook one-dimensional version of a crystal — and the maths spits out exactly what real solids show: allowed bands of energy interrupted by forbidden gaps. The repetition alone does all the work; no exotic ingredient is needed.

It is the regularity of the potential, not the presence of atoms as such, that creates bands; an artificial lattice of laser light holding cold atoms produces bands by the very same principle, with no solid in sight.
