parenteral route
The parenteral route means giving a drug by injection — with a needle — so it goes directly into or under the body's tissues rather than down the digestive tract. The word literally means 'beside the intestine' (para- = beside, enteron = gut), i.e. anything that bypasses the gut. In everyday terms, it is the route of shots, drips, and jabs.
By skipping the gut, parenteral administration avoids the hazards of the oral route: it is not affected by stomach acid, digestive enzymes, food, or vomiting, and it sidesteps the liver's first-pass metabolism (except for absorption from the gut wall). This makes it reliable and often faster. The main parenteral sub-routes are intravenous (into a vein), intramuscular (into muscle), and subcutaneous (under the skin), each with different speeds and capacities.
Parenteral dosing is essential when a drug would be destroyed if swallowed (such as insulin or heparin), when a patient cannot take anything by mouth, or when rapid, predictable effect is needed in an emergency. It also allows precise control of the dose reaching the blood.
The downsides are real: injections require trained staff or training, sterile technique, and cause pain; mistakes are harder to reverse once the drug is inside; and there are risks of infection, bleeding, and tissue damage. Parenteral routes are therefore reserved for situations where their advantages outweigh these costs.
Parenteral technically includes any non-gut route, but in practice the word almost always means injection.
