Picture a crowded room with two doors and people drifting between two halves. Once just as many cross left as cross right each minute, the count in each half stops changing — even though everyone is still moving. Chemical equilibrium is exactly this: a reversible reaction where the forward and reverse reactions run at the same rate, so the amounts of reactants and products hold steady. It is a busy balance, not a frozen stop; molecules keep converting both ways, but the books no longer change.
How far the balance tilts is captured by the equilibrium constant, K. It is the ratio of products to reactants once things settle: a large K means the room is mostly on the products side (the reaction strongly favors products), a small K means it sits mostly on the reactants side, and a K near 1 means a roughly even split. K is fixed by thermodynamics — it connects directly to Gibbs free energy, since a more negative delta G gives a larger K. For an acid-base reaction this is the whole game: comparing pKa values tells you K at a glance, and equilibrium always leans toward the side with the weaker acid and weaker base.
Two honest cautions keep this from being misused. First, equilibrium describes where a reaction ends up, not how quickly it gets there — a reaction can have a huge K yet take forever to reach it. Second, a catalyst speeds up both the forward and reverse directions equally, so it helps you reach equilibrium faster but never shifts where the equilibrium lies. Changing concentration, temperature, or removing a product can shift the balance (Le Chatelier's principle); a catalyst cannot.
For an acid-base reaction, K = 10^(pKa of acid formed - pKa of acid consumed). If you make a much weaker acid (higher pKa), K is large and equilibrium lies far to the products.
Equilibrium is a moving balance; K says where it sits, set by thermodynamics, not by a catalyst.
A catalyst changes the rate, never the equilibrium position. It lowers the activation energy for both directions equally, so you reach the same final balance faster — but you reach the same balance.
