Non-small-cell lung cancer, or NSCLC, is not a single tumor but a grouping of the lung cancers that are not the fast-spreading small-cell type. Think of it as a folder that holds several related but distinct cancers under one label, named for what pathologists see under the microscope: the cells are larger and behave differently from small-cell disease.

The main members of this group are adenocarcinoma (gland-forming, usually in the outer lung), squamous cell carcinoma (often in the central airways), and large-cell carcinoma. Together they make up roughly 80 to 85 percent of all lung cancers. Compared with small-cell cancer, NSCLC tends to grow and spread more slowly, which means surgery and other local treatments are often realistic options when the disease is caught early.

Modern care for NSCLC depends heavily on stage and on molecular testing. Early-stage tumors may be cured with surgery or focused radiation; advanced tumors are increasingly treated with targeted drugs aimed at specific mutations or with immunotherapy that mobilizes the patient's own immune cells. Chemotherapy still has an important role, often combined with these newer approaches.

A practical caveat: the boundary between subtypes can occasionally be blurry on a small biopsy, and some tumors share features. This is why pathologists use special stains and why a tissue sample large enough for full molecular analysis is so valuable.

NSCLC is an umbrella term; once it is diagnosed, the next steps are pinpointing the exact subtype, the stage, and any targetable molecular changes.
