nephelauxetic effect

The word looks intimidating but its Greek roots simply mean cloud-expanding (nephele, cloud; auxesis, growth). The idea is gentle: when a metal ion bonds to ligands, its d electrons do not stay packed as tightly as they were in the bare ion. The d cloud puffs out a little, because the electrons get to spread onto the ligands. The nephelauxetic effect is this expansion of the d-electron cloud on bonding, and it is one of the clearest fingerprints of covalency.
How do we see a cloud expand? We measure how strongly the d electrons repel each other. In a free ion the d electrons are crammed close together and repel strongly; that repulsion is captured by parameters called the Racah parameters (especially B). When the same ion bonds to ligands, B comes out smaller than the free-ion value — typically 70 to 90 percent of it. A smaller B means the electrons are repelling each other less, which means they are spread over a larger volume: the cloud has expanded. The ratio of bonded-B to free-ion-B, called beta, measures the effect directly; the smaller beta is, the more the cloud has expanded and the more covalent the bond.
Ranking ligands by how strongly they expand the cloud gives the nephelauxetic series, which runs roughly from F- (least expanding, most ionic) through water, ammonia, chloride, bromide, to iodide and sulfur and CN- (most expanding, most covalent). Notice this is NOT the same as the spectrochemical series — it ranks covalency, not field strength. The effect matters because it warns you that the bare-ion picture overestimates electron repulsion, it must be folded into accurate spectra (the pairing energy inside a complex is reduced for the same reason), and it gives a clean, quantitative handle on just how covalent a given metal-ligand bond really is.
For a Cr(III) ion, the Racah parameter B drops from about 920 cm-1 in the free ion to roughly 640 cm-1 in [Cr(H2O)6]3+ and lower still with more covalent ligands like chloride. That falling B (a beta well below 1) is the d cloud spreading onto the ligands — covalency you can read off a number.
A shrinking Racah B is a direct, numerical measure of how much the bond is covalent.
The nephelauxetic series and the spectrochemical series are different rankings and must not be confused: one orders ligands by covalency (how much the cloud expands), the other by field strength (how big delta is), and a ligand can rank differently on the two.
