multifactorial trait
A multifactorial trait is shaped by many factors at once — several or many genes plus environmental influences — rather than by a single cause. Think of the final outcome as the result of countless small dials, some genetic and some external, each turned a little, with the trait you see emerging from the whole arrangement rather than any one setting.
The term overlaps heavily with polygenic and quantitative, but it deliberately foregrounds the environment alongside the genes. Many common conditions and characteristics fall here: things like blood pressure, body weight, and susceptibility to common diseases reflect both an accumulated genetic predisposition and a lifetime of diet, exposure, and chance.
Because so many small contributors are involved, multifactorial traits do not follow tidy Mendelian ratios and tend not to cluster neatly in families. Relatives of an affected person carry a somewhat raised risk that falls off quickly with genetic distance, and the same trait can appear with no clear family history at all. This blend of heritable tendency and environmental contingency is why prediction for any single individual stays probabilistic rather than certain.
Type 2 diabetes is multifactorial: dozens of common variants each nudge risk a little, but whether the condition actually appears depends heavily on diet, weight, and activity over a lifetime.
