Step back from all the individual terms and there is one great question hanging over every solid: is its atomic arrangement orderly or disorderly? Order and disorder is that fundamental divide, the spectrum running from a perfectly repeating crystal at one end to a fully random arrangement at the other, with glasses, partly ordered alloys, and quasicrystals sitting in between.

It helps to see that order comes in kinds. Positional order is about where atoms sit; chemical (or substitutional) order is about which kind of atom sits on each site; and order can be long-range (repeating across the whole crystal) or short-range (only among near neighbors). A brass alloy, for example, can have perfect positional order (atoms on a regular grid) yet be chemically disordered (copper and zinc randomly sharing the sites), and heating or cooling can switch it between ordered and disordered forms, an order-disorder transformation.

This divide organizes the whole field: crystalline (long-range order), amorphous (short-range only), and the aperiodic quasicrystal (ordered but not periodic). Which side a material falls on sets whether it gives sharp diffraction spots, whether it has a sharp melting point, and much of its behavior. Honest reminder: perfect order and perfect disorder are idealizations; every real material lives somewhere in between, carrying defects even when highly ordered and local order even when highly disordered.

Disordered rarely means structureless. Even the most disordered solids keep short-range order; the useful question is always which kind of order (positional or chemical, short or long range) is present or missing.
