miscibility
Miscibility is whether two liquids will truly blend or stubbornly separate. Pour ethanol into water and they vanish into one another in any ratio — fully miscible. Pour oil into water and they split into layers no matter how hard you shake — immiscible.
More precisely, two liquids are miscible if they form a single homogeneous phase in all proportions, and immiscible if they do not. Many pairs are partially miscible: they mix only up to a limit, beyond which a separate phase appears, and this limit often shifts with temperature. Miscibility follows the same “like dissolves like” logic as solubility — polar with polar, non-polar with non-polar — and is really solubility of one liquid in another.
Miscibility governs whether cosolvent systems stay clear, whether a phase will separate on storage or cooling, and how oily and aqueous components behave. When liquids are immiscible but must be combined — oil and water in a cream — formulators turn to emulsions, using surfactants to disperse one liquid as fine droplets within the other rather than forcing true miscibility.
Miscibility is just solubility applied to two liquids. Solid-in-liquid we call solubility; liquid-in-liquid we call miscibility — both reflect how well the molecular attractions of the two substances match.
