minute ventilation
Minute ventilation is simply how much air you breathe in (or out) in one minute. It answers the bookkeeping question: over sixty seconds, what total volume of air passed through your airways?
The arithmetic is easy: tidal volume multiplied by respiratory rate. A resting adult taking 500 millilitre breaths about 12 times a minute moves roughly 6 litres per minute. The body can raise this many-fold during heavy exercise by breathing both deeper and faster.
Minute ventilation is the master dial that the respiratory control system turns to keep carbon dioxide in the blood steady. When CO2 rises, chemoreceptors drive ventilation up to blow it off; when CO2 falls too low, ventilation is dialled back.
A crucial caveat: not all ventilated air does useful work. Part of every breath only fills the conducting airways (dead space) and never reaches the alveoli, so a high minute ventilation does not guarantee adequate gas exchange — what matters for the blood is the alveolar ventilation hidden inside it.
At rest about 6 litres per minute suffices; during peak exercise a fit adult may push minute ventilation past 100 litres per minute to meet soaring oxygen demand.
Minute ventilation scales steeply with effort.
A patient breathing fast and shallow can have a high minute ventilation yet still retain carbon dioxide, because each tiny breath wastes proportionally more on dead space — the air moves, but little of it reaches the alveoli.
