Implantable microLED array / optrode

A device that brings light generation into the tissue rather than relying on external optics — either by integrating microscopic LEDs directly onto a penetrating shank, or by pairing optical fibers / waveguides with recording contacts (an optrode) for combined stimulation and electrophysiology. On-shank microLED arrays provide many independently addressable light sources at depth, escaping the surface-illumination scattering limit and enabling patterned deep optogenetic control in freely-moving animals.

The dominant engineering problems are heat (LEDs are inefficient, and the local temperature rise must stay well below the roughly one-degree-Celsius neural-damage threshold), the electrical stimulation artifact injected into nearby recording sites, interconnect and wiring density at scale, and the same chronic encapsulation and biocompatibility constraints as any implant. Optrodes are the practical bridge between optical write-in and electrical read-out for chronic behaving-animal work.
