the Mexican-hat potential

Imagine a marble rolling on a surface shaped like a sombrero, or the punted-up bottom of a wine bottle: a small bump in the very center, and a circular trough of lowest height running all the way around it. If you place the marble on the central bump it can balance there briefly, but the slightest nudge sends it rolling down into the trough. Once in the trough, it settles at some point on the circle — and which point it lands on is arbitrary, because every spot in the trough is equally low. This shape is the Mexican-hat potential, and it is the simplest picture of how the Higgs field chooses its value.

In physics a 'potential' is just a curve showing how much energy a field has for each possible value it might take; systems roll downhill toward lower energy and rest at the bottom. For an ordinary field the bottom of the curve sits at value zero, so empty space has the field switched off. The Higgs potential is special: its curve has a little hill at zero and a ring of minimum energy at a nonzero value. So the lowest-energy state — empty space, the vacuum — is not at zero but somewhere on that ring. The field 'rolls off the central bump' and settles at a nonzero value everywhere. The height of the central bump and the radius of the trough are set by two numbers in the theory, and together they fix the strength of the field and the mass of the Higgs boson.

This single shape encodes the whole story of spontaneous symmetry breaking. The potential itself is perfectly round (symmetric about the center), but the marble must come to rest at one particular point on the trough, breaking that roundness — exactly the hidden-symmetry idea. Moving around the trough costs no energy (it is flat there), which corresponds to a massless would-be particle (the Goldstone direction); climbing up the side of the trough costs energy, which corresponds to the massive Higgs boson. So the picture is not mere decoration: each feature of the hat maps onto a real, measurable consequence in particle physics.

Tip a wine bottle upside down and look at the dimple in its base: a peak in the middle, a circular valley around it. A ball balanced on the peak is the unbroken symmetric state; the ball at rest somewhere in the valley is our universe's vacuum, with the Higgs field 'switched on' at a nonzero value.

The hat shape is a schematic of energy versus field value, not a literal landscape in space. The 'rolling' happened in the early universe as it cooled, not as something we watch today.
