Memory encoding & consolidation
Encoding is the initial transformation of experience into a labile neural trace; consolidation is the set of slower processes that render that trace durable. Two timescales are distinguished. Synaptic (cellular) consolidation stabilizes individual memories over minutes to hours through protein-synthesis-dependent synaptic change. Systems consolidation redistributes a memory over days to years from a hippocampus-dependent form to a distributed neocortical representation, a process thought to depend on repeated hippocampal-neocortical dialogue, much of it during sleep.
For cognitive prosthetics the key implication is that a memory has multiple intervention windows: at encoding (when attention and hippocampal engagement gate what enters), during post-encoding rest and sleep (when consolidation can be biased), and at retrieval (when a reactivated memory briefly becomes labile again — reconsolidation). Each window is a different engineering target with different biomarkers and different risks.
