Imagine driving with the fuel gauge in mind. Break-even is the moment the tank hits empty — stall there and you are stranded. The margin of safety is how much fuel you have above empty right now: the cushion between where you are and where disaster begins. A big margin means sales could slump a lot before you slide into a loss; a thin margin means one bad month tips you into the red.
Precisely, the margin of safety is the amount by which actual (or budgeted) sales exceed the break-even sales. It can be expressed in units, in dollars, or as a percentage of sales (the margin-of-safety ratio = (actual sales minus break-even sales) divided by actual sales). For example, if a company expects sales of 500,000 and its break-even is 350,000, its margin of safety is 150,000, or 150,000 over 500,000 equals 30%. That 30% means sales could fall by nearly a third before the company starts losing money. The smaller this number, the closer the firm sits to the edge.
This matters because the margin of safety translates the abstract break-even point into a plain measure of risk and resilience — exactly what a manager, lender, or investor wants when judging how much shock a business can absorb. It pairs naturally with operating leverage: a company with high fixed costs tends to have a thinner margin of safety and feels sales swings more violently. A caution: like all CVP figures, it assumes the cost and price relationships hold, so a comfortable margin computed on shaky assumptions can give false confidence.
A workshop budgets 80,000 of sales and breaks even at 60,000, giving a margin of safety of 20,000, or 25% — meaning sales can drop a quarter before the workshop slips into a loss.

A wide margin of safety is reassuring only if the break-even behind it is realistic; computed on shaky cost-price assumptions, it can lull a business into false confidence.
