Every household needs a way to deal with garbage, broken appliances, and spoiled food — ideally in one safe place, not spread across the living room. In an animal cell that place is the lysosome: a small membrane bag full of powerful digestive enzymes that breaks down worn-out parts and engulfed material into reusable raw pieces.

A lysosome is a membrane-bound organelle containing dozens of acid-loving enzymes that chop up proteins, fats, sugars, and nucleic acids. Its interior is kept distinctly acidic (around pH 5), which both helps those enzymes work and acts as a safety feature — if a lysosome leaks, the enzymes are far less active out in the neutral cytosol. Lysosomes fuse with vesicles bringing in cargo: bacteria captured by immune cells, nutrients taken in from outside, and even the cell's own broken organelles delivered by autophagy. The digested fragments are then released back into the cytosol to be recycled.

Lysosomes are central to cellular recycling and quality control, and they are essentially the cell's digestive and immune disposal system. When a single lysosomal enzyme is missing because of a genetic defect, undigested material piles up, causing serious inherited "lysosomal storage diseases" such as Tay-Sachs. Plant and fungal cells usually use the large central vacuole for similar digestive work instead.

When a white blood cell swallows a bacterium, it fuses lysosomes onto the captured germ and digests it alive — turning the lysosome into a tiny lethal stomach.

Lysosomes are both the cell's recycling plant and a weapon of the immune system.

The enzymes inside are dangerous, so they are designed to work best at the lysosome's acidic pH; this acid trick keeps a small leak from digesting the cell from the inside.
