Left ventricular ejection fraction on echo is the single most asked-for number in cardiology: the fraction of the blood filling the main pumping chamber that is squeezed out with each beat, measured by ultrasound. If the chamber holds a cupful before contraction and pushes out a bit more than half of it, the ejection fraction is a bit over fifty percent. It is a compact summary of how strongly the left ventricle pumps.
On echocardiography the ejection fraction can be gauged several ways. An experienced reader can estimate it visually from the vigor of wall motion, but the standard quantitative method traces the inner border of the chamber at its fullest and emptiest and computes the percentage change in volume. Newer three-dimensional and strain techniques refine this further. A normal value sits roughly in the mid-fifties to about seventy percent; lower numbers indicate a weakened pump, and ejection fraction is central to classifying and treating heart failure.
The figure is powerful but imperfect. It depends on clear images, the chosen method, and the reader, so a swing of a few points between studies may reflect measurement variability rather than real change. It also describes only squeezing (systolic) function — a heart can fail with a normal or near-normal ejection fraction because it relaxes and fills poorly. The number is best interpreted alongside symptoms, chamber size, and the rest of the study.
A normal left ventricular ejection fraction is roughly 55 to 70 percent; the heart-failure subtypes HFrEF and HFpEF are defined largely by whether this number is reduced or preserved.
