Kroger-Vink notation

Once you start treating defects as chemical species that react — vacancies appearing, ions moving, charges shuffling — you need a bookkeeping language precise enough to keep every atom and every charge accounted for. Kroger-Vink notation is that language: a compact symbol for each defect that records three things at once — what the defect is, where it sits, and what electric charge it carries relative to the perfect crystal. It looks cryptic at first but reads like a tidy label once you know the three slots.

The symbol is written in the form M with a subscript and a superscript: the main letter M says WHAT occupies the site (a chemical symbol, or V for a vacancy, or an i to mean an interstitial position). The SUBSCRIPT says WHICH site it sits on (the element whose site it is, or i for an interstitial site). The SUPERSCRIPT gives the EFFECTIVE CHARGE — the charge relative to what a perfect crystal would have there — using a dot for each unit of positive charge, a prime (an apostrophe) for each unit of negative charge, and a cross for neutral. So in NaCl, a sodium vacancy is written V with subscript Na and one prime, meaning a missing Na+ leaves the site one unit short of positive charge, i.e. effectively minus one; a chlorine vacancy is V with subscript Cl and one dot, effectively plus one.

The point of all this precision is that defect reactions must balance three separate things at once: mass (atoms in equals atoms out), site ratio (the crystal keeps its proper ratio of cation to anion sites), and charge (effective charges sum equally on both sides). Writing a Schottky reaction in Kroger-Vink notation makes all three checkable at a glance: nothing (a perfect crystal) goes to V'_Na plus V-dot_Cl — one Na site and one Cl site created, and the minus-one and plus-one effective charges cancel. This is the notation every defect-chemistry equation is written in, and learning to read it is the price of admission to the whole subject.

A Frenkel defect in silver chloride, written in Kroger-Vink notation: Ag_Ag (silver on its own site, neutral) goes to Ag-dot with subscript i (a silver ion in an interstitial site, effective charge plus one) plus V'_Ag (a silver vacancy, effective charge minus one). Atoms balance (one Ag each side), sites balance, and the plus-one and minus-one effective charges cancel — a valid defect reaction.

Kroger-Vink packs three facts into one symbol: species, site (subscript), and effective charge (dot +, prime -, cross 0).

The superscript is EFFECTIVE charge — the charge relative to the perfect lattice, not the ion's absolute charge. A sodium vacancy is minus-one effective (missing a plus ion), even though 'nothing' has no real charge; confusing effective with absolute charge is the classic Kroger-Vink mistake.
