IUPAC nomenclature is the worldwide rulebook for giving every organic molecule a unique, unambiguous name from which a chemist anywhere can redraw its exact structure. IUPAC stands for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the body that maintains the rules. Common names like 'isooctane' or 'wood alcohol' are charming but inconsistent; the systematic name is a precise address.

The name is built like a sentence with a fixed grammar. First find the longest continuous carbon chain — the parent chain — which sets the root name (meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex...) and a suffix for the main functional group (-ane for an alkane). Then number that chain so the attached groups get the lowest possible locants, name each branch as a substituent (a methyl, an ethyl, a chloro...), put those substituents in alphabetical order as prefixes, and use commas and hyphens to glue numbers to names: for example 2-methylpentane or 1,2-dichloroethane.

This grid-like system scales from methane up to a protein. Because the name encodes the connectivity, two chemists on opposite sides of the planet who have never met can communicate a structure exactly, with no picture needed. For the same reason, learning to name and to 'un-name' (draw from a name) is the literacy of organic chemistry — clumsy at first, but it makes every later topic readable.

The name 2-methylpentane tells you: a five-carbon chain (pentane) with a one-carbon branch (methyl) on carbon 2 — enough to draw it without ever seeing a picture.

Root (pentane) + locant (2-) + substituent (methyl): a name read like a coded address.

A few common names (acetic acid, toluene, acetone) are still officially retained by IUPAC; the goal is one accepted name per structure, not the abolition of every traditional name.
